Yasin Ayari's early goal gave Brighton & Hove Albion a monumental 1-0 Premier League victory away to Manchester City on Saturday. The win at the Etihad Stadium moves the Seagulls up to third in the table, now just two points behind the reigning champions. This result, which leaves Brighton on 16 points from five wins, one draw and two losses this season, cuts the gap to the league leaders to five points.

Ayari struck in the 11th minute, finishing into an empty net after a defensive mix-up. Maxim De Cuyper's attempted clearance was missed by the City defence, allowing Diego Gómez to cross for the Swedish midfielder to score with Gianluigi Donnarumma stranded. This victory followed a dramatic 2-2 draw between the same sides just three days earlier, on Wednesday 28 October, in which Georginio Rutter was among the scorers for Brighton.

Defensive resilience

Brighton's defence, marshalled by captain Lewis Dunk, then held firm under intense pressure. Bart Verbruggen made seven saves, including a key stop to tip Iliman Ndiaye's shot onto the crossbar in the second half. Manchester City dominated possession with 62% but could not find a way through, with Erling Haaland kept quiet. The team's defensive solidity is reflected in a season record of 23 goals scored and only seven conceded.

Hürzeler made key changes to protect the lead, introducing Mats Wieffer and Jaouen Hadjam in the 64th minute to shore up the midfield. Jack Hinshelwood, who came on for De Cuyper, later missed a chance to double the advantage.

The result extends Brighton's impressive recent form to two wins, two draws and one loss in their last five league games. This sequence includes the win over Crystal Palace on 18 October and draws with FK Jablonec and Manchester City prior to this latest triumph.

City manager Enzo Maresca said he had not reviewed the incident leading to the goal. His side has now lost two consecutive league matches.

Brighton's next challenge is a home fixture against Brentford on Sunday 8 November. The Bees currently sit sixth, setting up another significant test in the Premier League title race. The team will look to top scorer C. Kostoulas, who has three goals this season, to provide further attacking threat.
