Brighton & Hove Albion produced a resilient display to draw 2-2 with Manchester City in the League Cup Round of 16 on Wednesday. The Seagulls, who sit third in the Premier League with 16 points from five wins, a draw and two losses, twice came from behind in a match that descended into a penalty shootout in all but name during a frantic final ten minutes.

Malick Yalcouyé gave Brighton the lead after half an hour, finishing from a Georginio Rutter assist. City responded quickly, with Mateo Kovačić levelling before the break. Rutter restored the visitors' advantage early in the second half, only for Vitor Nunes to equalise for the hosts with just under twenty minutes remaining.

The game then exploded into chaos. From the 91st minute onwards, six penalties were awarded. Phil Foden, Pascal Groß, Enzo Fernández, Matt O'Riley, Jeremy Doku and Maxim De Cuyper all converted from the spot. City's Kovačić and Brighton's Yasin Ayari and Lewis Dunk all missed their attempts, with Rayan Cherki scoring the final penalty of the game in the 97th minute. The match finished 2-2, with the tie to be decided by a separate penalty shootout.

Team performance

Hürzeler's side set up in a 4-2-3-1 shape and were effective on the counter, registering 17 shots to City's 13. They also won seven corners and forced 20 fouls, underlining their attacking intent. Steele made four saves in the Brighton goal. The result extends a strong run of form for the Seagulls, who are third in the Premier League standings with 16 points from eight games. Their recent sequence reads two wins, two draws and one loss, following a 2-0 defeat to Liverpool last Saturday and a goalless draw with FK Jablonec last Thursday. This season they have scored 23 goals and conceded just seven, giving them a goal difference of plus sixteen.

They now face an immediate return to the Etihad Stadium this Saturday for a Premier League fixture against the same opponents. Manchester City are the league leaders, five points ahead of Brighton in the table. Brighton's next match is against Manchester City away on Saturday 31 October. The club's top scorer this season is C. Kostoulas with three goals in eight appearances.
