Brighton & Hove Albion has completed the signing of Canadian striker Promise David on a season-long loan from Belgian side Union Saint-Gilloise. The deal includes an obligation to buy for a reported fee of US$29.7 million if certain criteria are met. David, 25, arrives after scoring 41 goals in 82 matches for Union, helping them win their first league title in 90 years in 2025. Brighton finished eighth in the Premier League last season with 53 points, 14 wins, 11 draws, and 13 losses from 38 games.
Who is Promise David?
Born in Brampton, Ontario, to Nigerian parents, David began his professional career in Croatia before moving to Malta, Estonia, and finally Belgium in July 2024. He represented Nigeria at the U-23 level before switching allegiance to Canada in 2025. David scored one goal at the 2026 World Cup and has four goals in 14 appearances for the senior national team.
Why this move matters for Brighton
Brighton sporting director Mike Cave highlighted David’s physical attributes and goal-scoring record as key reasons for the signing. "Promise is someone we have been watching for some time," Cave said. "He is an out-and-out striker who possesses outstanding physical attributes and a track record of scoring goals." David’s experience at international level and in European competition is expected to be valuable this season.
What comes next for David at Brighton?
David will join a Brighton side that scored 52 goals and conceded 46 last season, finishing 32 points behind leaders Arsenal. He will look to add depth to the attack, especially with Evan Ferguson, Yankuba Minteh, Carlos Baleba, and Matt O’Riley currently sidelined. Brighton’s recent form was LLWLW, and David’s arrival could provide a much-needed boost as they prepare for the new season.
