Brighton & Hove Albion goalkeeper Sophie Baggaley signs for Birmingham City
Brighton & Hove Albion goalkeeper Sophie Baggaley has joined newly-promoted Birmingham City on a free transfer after her contract expired. The 29-year-old, who made 42 appearances for Brighton since joining in 2023, returns to the club where she began her career at age six.
What happened?
Baggaley departs Brighton after two seasons, during which she was voted Player of the Season in her debut campaign. However, her game time diminished following the arrival of Nigerian goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie. Birmingham confirmed the signing, believed to be a two-year deal with an option for another year.
Why it matters for Brighton & Hove Albion
Brighton finished 8th in the Premier League last season with 53 points (14W-11D-13L), scoring 52 goals and conceding 46. Baggaley’s departure leaves a gap in goalkeeping depth, though Nnadozie remains as the first-choice keeper. The club will now assess whether to bring in a replacement or rely on their existing squad.
What comes next?
Baggaley, who has been a regular in England squads since 2025 but is yet to earn a senior cap, expressed excitement about returning to Birmingham. She said, "The club has invested heavily in the women’s team, and I’m eager to contribute." Meanwhile, Brighton will focus on finalizing their squad ahead of the new season, with Zadok Yohanna currently sidelined due to injury.
