Brighton & Hove Albion have paid tribute to former midfielder Doug Loft following his sudden death. The club expressed devastation at the news.
Port Vale, where Loft spent several years, announced his passing in an official statement. Gillingham, another of his former clubs, stated they were "absolutely devastated" to announce the death of their former captain.
Brighton & Hove Albion posted a message on social media. The club stated that Doug would always be fondly remembered by fans and staff alike.
Brighton connection
Doug Loft joined Brighton & Hove Albion in 2006. He made appearances for the Seagulls during the Withdean Stadium era before moving to Port Vale. His professional career began after a spell at Hastings United.
A respected Football League career
Loft built an excellent career across the Football League, becoming a key figure at Port Vale. He was named the club's Player of the Season for one campaign and wore the captain's armband as they won promotion from League Two. After leaving, he played for several other clubs before retiring following a serious injury.
Tributes from across the game
Former teammates and clubs have shared heartfelt condolences. A former colleague wrote on social media that life is short. Tonbridge Angels described Loft as "a true professional, a talented player and a wonderful person". Other clubs also issued statements of sympathy. Port Vale has requested permission for players to wear black armbands and observe a minute's silence before their next match.
The news comes as the current Brighton side continues a strong run of form. Their next fixture is a home match against Crystal Palace. Loft is survived by his wife and their two daughters.
