Transfer News: Joel Veltman Joins West Ham
West Ham United has made a shrewd signing by bringing in former Brighton & Hove Albion defender Joel Veltman as a free agent. The 34-year-old versatile defender, who can play at right-back or centre-back, signed a one-year deal with the London club and includes an option for a further 12 months.
Veltman, known for his leadership qualities and experience, brings a wealth of knowledge to West Ham's squad. He was the captain at Ajax and has been capped 28 times by the Netherlands, helping them reach the semi-final stage of the World Cup in 2014 and participating in their Euro Championship squad in 2021.

Speaking to West Ham club media, Veltman expressed his enthusiasm about joining West Ham. 'I’m delighted to have signed, and I can’t wait to get started,' he said. 'The project here really excites me. I spoke to Nuno [Espirito Santo, West Ham’s head coach], as well as my family and my agent, and everything added up. We know that West Ham need to be in the Premier League, and for sure that is our goal for the season.'
The defender's experience will undoubtedly benefit West Ham, who face Portsmouth in the first round of the EFL Cup on Saturday before beginning their Championship campaign against Burnley on August 16. With Veltman's addition, West Ham look set to strengthen their defensive options and challenge for promotion.
